Using the Sears catalog to demonstrate inflaction.

1.  Research what a Sears Catalog Home is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Catalog_Home  and  http://www.searsarchives.com click on "Historic Homes" and "What is a Sears home?"

.

2. Use the Sears Archive link from above and select a home from the ones listed in the historic catalog.  If possible find a close match to your own home or one in your neighborhood that looks to be of a similiar style and size. Be sure to read the 2nd paragraph in the description!

.

3.  Use the US Census to determine the Average (median) value of the homes in your zip code (42437) and the US average.

http://www.census.gov/   Click on American factfinder on left side, then scroll down a bit.

(note the value of your home includes the land.  The Sears Catalog is the house only.  In order for this to be an "apples to apples" match we need to remove the value of the land.)

.

4.  Use a Modular home website to get a price of a house.

http://www.dgmodular.com/index1.html

(on left click on floor plans and Mainland Prices)

or

http://www.caseymodularhomes.com/index2.htm

(On left click on Price list)

.

5. Use an inflation calculator to determine what the cost of the historic home would be if it were for sale today.

http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm and  http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

.

6.  Write a short statement about your findings.
